The Brampton Honey Badgers of the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) announced Thursday that they have re-signed Cody John. The Toronto native is coming off a successful campaign in Cyprus with Omonia B.C., averaging 17.9 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 4.2 assists in 14 contests.

Approaching a third season wearing the black and gold, John played in 23 games combined between the 2020 and 2021 seasons, third-most in franchise history. In his Honey Badgers career, John has averaged 8.3 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 16.7 minutes. During the 2021 campaign, which saw the Honey Badgers finish third in the CEBL regular season standings, John led the team in scoring on three occasions, including a 23-point performance with a game-ending corner-three against the Guelph Nighthawks on July 3. Elsewhere in the CEBL, John appeared in 11 games last season with the Ottawa BlackJacks and joined the Edmonton Stingers during Window 1 of the 2021 Basketball Champions League Americas.

John, 26, has averaged 12.0 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 2.5 assists over the course of a 65 game professional career in Kosovo, Cyprus, and the CEBL. The 6-foot-3 guard made his professional debut with the Honey Badgers during the 2020 CEBL Summer Series on July 25 against the Niagara River Lions.



The former Weber State Wildcat will join former high-school teammate Koby McEwen with the Honey Badgers this summer. Both graduates of Weber State, McEwen and John were teammates for one season at Wasatch Academy in Mount Pleasant, UT, before continuing their basketball journeys. John played a total of 128 games for the Wildcats during a four-year collegiate career and averaged 10.4 points and 3.1 rebounds. In a breakout senior season, he earned honorable mention All-Big Sky and finished eleventh in the conference in scoring. 

This signing comes days after the Honey Badgers named Antoine Broxsie the third head coach in team history. Broxsie is currently Player Development Coach with the Cleveland Cavaliers. John is the sixth player to re-sign with the Honey Badgers during this free-agency period, joining Jeremiah Tilmon Jr., Koby McEwen, Zane Waterman, Prince Oduro, and Kyle Johnson. The team also added Najee Brown-Henderson and Callum Baker in last week’s CEBL U SPORTS Draft.

Coming off a historic championship in 2022, the Honey Badgers open the 2023 campaign May 24 at TD Place Arena in Ottawa, in what will tip off the CEBL's fifth season. The Honey Badgers play their first game at the CAA Centre in Brampton two days later, May 26, against rival Scarborough.
