• What is the Canadian Elite Basketball League?

A league created by Canadians for Canadians with a mission to develop Canadian players, coaches, sports executives, and referees, the CEBL boasts the highest percentage of Canadian players of any pro league in the country with 73% of its 2023 rosters being Canadian. Players bring experience from the NBA, NBA G League, top international pro leagues, the Canadian National team program, and top NCAA programs as well as U SPORTS. Fourteen players have signed NBA contracts following a CEBL season, and numerous CEBL players attend NBA G League training camps every year. The CEBL season runs from May through August.

The CEBL’s inaugural season of 2019 featured six teams in four provinces: Niagara, Hamilton (now Brampton), Guelph (now Calgary), Edmonton, Saskatchewan, and Fraser Valley (now Vancouver). Ottawa was added with the 2020 season, and Scarborough and Montreal joined the league in 2022. The Winnipeg Sea Bears were the latest addition to the league, joining ahead of the 2023 campaign. The CEBL was the first pro league to return to play in Canada after Covid-19 had shut down the sports world in March of 2020, playing the three-week CEBL Summer Series on CBC television.

The CEBL’s broadcast schedule will be announced at a later date, but all games including playoffs will be livestreamed and archived on the CEBL’s OTT platform, CEBL+, and on CEBL Mobile, the official app of the CEBL (available on Android and iOS devices).

  • Who are the Brampton Honey Badgers?

    They’re the 2022 CEBL Champions!

The Honey Badgers are one of the CEBL’s original six founding franchises, launching on June 12, 2018 as the Hamilton Honey Badgers. The club reached the CEBL Championship game in the inaugural season of 2019 and has reached the semifinals in three of four seasons.

Following a CEBL quarter-final exit in the club’s inaugural season at the CAA Centre, Brampton will look the improve on their 8-12 record when they open the 2024 season against the Niagara River Lions on May 24, 2024.

The Honey Badgers have had staff or players affiliated with 22 of the 30 NBA teams. Sixty-five players have gone on to sign pro contracts following their summer with this franchise—by far the largest margin of success in the CEBL. Lindell Wigginton became the first Canadian CEBL player to sign an NBA contract (Milwaukee) after playing in the league in 2021.

The Honey Badgers have relocated from Hamilton after winning the 2022 CEBL Championship by defeating Ottawa in the semifinals and then Scarborough in the league championship game at Championship Weekend in Ottawa this past August.

  • Why did the Honey Badgers move from Hamilton to Brampton?

Substantial renovations to Hamilton’s FirstOntario Centre, where the Honey Badgers played, will close the arena for at least the 2024 and 2025 CEBL seasons. Due to the pandemic, the Honey Badgers were able to play only 24 games in front of home fans during four seasons and endured a stretch of 23 months with no home dates. The idea of relaunching the team again in 2026 or later after being displaced for two seasons made extremely difficult circumstances impossible.

The opportunity to relocate to a strong basketball market in Brampton converted an untenable situation into a big win for the people of Peel Region, for the Honey Badgers organization, and for the growth of Canadian basketball.
