FATHER'S DAY HAS EXTRA MEANING FOR HONEY BADGERS GUARD CODY JOHN

Father’s Day is an important day for families all across the world, but for Honey Badgers guard Cody John it means just a little bit more.

At the age of six while John was living in his hometown of Mississauga ON, his father tragically passed away in a car accident. This made him grow up quickly, become independent at a young age, and to appreciate Father’s Day even more.

“My father’s passing made me grow up a lot faster, I never really depended on many people growing up,” John said. “I also left for prep school when I was 13, so I kind of just took off. I became more of a man for sure.

“When I’m home in Canada I always go to his grave,” said the 24-year-old. “I wish I could be here more to go to his gravesite. He’s here in spirit and always will be. I just like to embrace Father’s Day. It’s a big day for my family and me to celebrate. Hopefully I’ll play on Father’s Day one day and use that as extra motivation.”

John is now a father himself, with four-year-old son Kingston inspiring him both on and off the court.

“My son gives me extra motivation on the court because I never want to let him down,” said John. “I want to be there for my son every step of the way. I show him no matter what you’re going through just keep pushing through it. Don’t let things off the court carry onto the court and effect your game. I use him as motivation everyday, in everything I do.”

The loss of his father made John realize how important it is to be there in your child’s life. He says Father’s Day makes him feel special because he feels appreciated for the sacrifices he makes for Kingston. People in his family show him appreciation for everything he does for his son.

No matter what, especially on this day, John’s own father is always in the back of his mind. John shared his message for son’s who are lucky enough to have their fathers in their lives.

“Appreciate that there’s a lot of things kids don’t see that their dads do, the sacrifices they make,” said John. “Sometimes your dad can’t be present all the time but there is always a reason behind everything, just always appreciate the time you have with them.”

John shared what he would say to his father if he were here today.

“I wish you could be here, and I love you very much,” he said.

Happy Father’s Day to all the fathers and father figures who play such a critical role in the lives of children.
