Honey Badgers Appoint Anthony As Player Consultant

A System Administrator • May 21, 2020
Joel Anthony, a 10-year veteran of the NBA who appeared in 556 regular season and playoff games, and a long-time member of the Canadian senior national team, has been named as Player Consultant to the Hamilton Honey Badgers for the 2020 season.

“Joel Anthony brings extensive playing experience at the highest level of basketball that will help in the development of our players this season,” said team general manager Jermaine Anderson in making the announcement Thursday. “Joel was with two NBA Championship winning teams in Miami and has competed alongside some of the NBA’s very best players, including Shaquille O’Neal, LeBron James, Chris Bosh, Kawhi Leonard, and Alonzo Mourning. He has learned the game under the guidance of coaches such as Pat Riley, Gregg Popovich, Erik Spoelstra, Brad Stevens, and Stan Van Gundy. He has a lot to offer our players, coaches, and staff.”

Anthony played his first seven NBA seasons with the Miami Heat, winning NBA titles in 2012 and 2013. He was traded to the Boston Celtics midway through the 2013-14 campaign, and from the Celtics to Detroit just prior to the 2014-15 season. After being waived by the Pistons in the summer of 2016, Anthony signed with San Antonio for the 2016-17 season. His NBA career came to an end when he was among the final players released by the Milwaukee Bucks during their 2017 training camp.

On February 27, 2018 Anthony signed with San Lorenzo of Argentina’s Liga Nacional de Basquetbol (LNB), which also competes in The Americas League. During his two-year stint in Argentina he helped the club win back-to-back championships in both leagues.

A 2007 graduate of the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, Anthony was named Mountain West Conference Defensive Player of the Year his senior season after finishing second in the nation in blocks-per-40-minutes (6.77) and first in the conference in blocked shots, blocks per game, and defensive win shares.

Hamilton’s 2020 regular season was scheduled to tip off May 8 in Edmonton, but due to the coronavirus outbreak the CEBL was forced in mid-April to announce a delay to the start of the season into June. The league is pursuing various contingencies with federal and provincial health and government officials in order to play this summer.
