The Brampton Honey Badgers of the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) announced Tuesday that they have signed Toronto, Ontario forward Shamiel Stevenson. The former Ottawa BlackJacks forward recently appeared in 29 games în România with CSM Targu Jiu, averaging 19.9 points, 7.4 rebounds, and 29.9 minutes.

In the midst of his third professional season, Stevenson journey brought him to Romania where he achieved double-figures in scoring in all but two games. His breakout-offensive season was highlighted by a 40-point performance on March 4 against Miercurea Ciuc, setting a career high. The Hillcrest Prep product finished the campaign as the team leader in scoring and field-goals made with 150. 

Stevenson is no stranger to the CEBL, having played in nine games with the CEBL semifinalists Ottawa BlackJacks last summer. His time in the nation’s capital featured an 11-point effort against the Guelph Nighthawks on June 9.

“Shamiel is a physical player who has the ability to defend multiple positions and is a capable scorer.” said Jermaine Anderson, general manager and vice-president of basketball operations. “Currently, we’re struggling on both ends of the floor. We’re hopeful that Shamiel will provide a much needed spark off the bench. We’re looking forward to having him join our Honey Badger family.”

Upon graduating college in the spring of 2021, Stevenson took his talents to Serbia for his debut professional season. In 18 games with KK Metalac Valjevo, Stevenson averaged 12.7 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 25.7 minutes.

Stevenson capped off his collegiate career with the Cornhuskers of the University of Nebraska playing in 26 games during the 2020-21 season. He transferred to Lincoln from the University of Nevada, never suiting up in a game for the Wolf Pack. Originally committing to the University of Pittsburgh, Stevenson appeared in 32 games with the Panthers during his freshman season, eventually leaving after the fall semester as a sophomore.

Stevenson was selected to play in the 2017 BioSteel All-Canadian Game and won the slam dunk contest at the event. He was also named MVP of the North Pole Hoops Showcase in Ontario, finishing with 22 points, 15 rebounds, four assists, two steals and two blocks in the Top 20 Prospect Game.

Stevenson is the stepbrother of recently acquired forward Tyrell Green, who was signed by the Honey Badgers on July 4.

The Honey Badgers play host to the Eastern Conference leading Ottawa BlackJacks on Wednesday night at CAA Centre in Brampton. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. and tickets are available at www.honeybadgers.ca/tickets.
