The Hamilton Honey Badgers landed three players on the All-CEBL First and Second teams as announced by the Canadian Elite Basketball League on Friday. Rookie Jean-Victor Mukama was named to the All-CEBL First team, while veterans Brianté Weber and Owen Klassen were selected to the All-CEBL Second team. Voting was conducted by coaches, general managers, and media that covered the CEBL Summer Series, the league’s single-site tournament held, July 25 to August 9 in St. Catharines.

Mukama led Hamilton in scoring with a 14.1 per game average and ranked second in rebounding average (6.3) and minutes played (26.1). Mukama was perhaps the CEBL’s most improved player over the course of the Summer Series and was selected as Hamilton’s Player of the Game in the team’s final three outings when he averaged 25.0 points, 5.3 rebounds and shot .565 from the field. The 26-year-old former resident of Hamilton is playing for Leeuwarden in the Dutch Basketball League this fall and winter on his first professional contract overseas.

Weber, who previously has been honoured as winner of the CEBL Clutch Player of the Year and CEBL Defensive Player of the Year awards, earned All-CEBL Second team honours. He averaged 12.4 points, 5.4 rebounds, 4.1 assists, and a league-high 2.5 steals in 27.3 minutes during Hamilton’s eight games. His .481 field goal percentage was second-best among Honey Badgers who attempted at least six shots per game. Weber dominated three of Hamilton’s four successful Elam Ending periods. His five years of professional playing experience includes 47 games in the NBA.

In a guard-heavy league Klassen was among the CEBL’s few true post players. The 6-foot-10 sixth-year pro did a lot of the heavy lifting in the paint for the Honey Badgers and anchored arguably the league’s best defensive unit. He averaged 8.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 1.13 blocks and 21.1 minutes in Hamilton’s eight contests.

Joining Mukama on the All-CEBL First team is Thomas Scrubb of Ottawa, and Xavier Moon, Jordan Baker and Travis Daniels, all of the champion Edmonton Stingers.

Klassen and Weber are joined on the Second team by Tre’Darius McCallum of Guelph, and Olu Ashaolu and Jahenns Manigat both of Fraser Valley.

The Honey Badgers posted a 4-4 record in the CEBL Summer Series, falling to Fraser Valley in the playoff semifinals. The series tipped off July 25 and became the first professional sports league in Canada to return to play since the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus in mid-March shut down sports across the country. Games were televised live nationally on CBC, the CBC Gem App, and on cbcsports.ca. They were carried to more than 130 million people internationally thanks to distribution agreements secured in Australia, Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore and Taiwan by MEDIAPRO Canada, the international media rights and production partner of the CEBL. All Summer Series games were also livestreamed on Twitch.

A league created by Canadians for Canadians, the CEBL has the highest percentage of Canadian players of any professional league in the country, with 80 percent of its current rosters being Canadians. Players come from the NBA G League, top international leagues, the Canadian National team program, and top NCAA programs as well as U Sports. The only First Division Professional League partner of Canada Basketball, the CEBL season typically runs from May through August. More information is available at www.cebl.ca.
