When Hamilton Honey Badgers general manager Jermaine Anderson signed NBA veteran Brianté Weber to a contract for the 2020 season, he knew he was adding one of the best defensive players in the history of NCAA men’s basketball and a player who was widely-regarded for his defense at both the NBA G League and NBA levels. Weber showed why during the CEBL Summer Series and Wednesday was named the CEBL’s Defensive Player of the Year in a vote of the league’s coaches, general managers, and media covering the series.

On Monday the league announced that Weber was selected Clutch Player of the Year, an award determined through a vote of fans on the league’s social media channels. Weber’s play showcased the CEBL’s use of the Elam Ending throughout the Summer Series as he consistently came through for the Honey Badgers when they needed a defensive stop or a big basket.

Weber out-polled Edmonton’s Xavier Moon, a finalist for the CEBL Player of the Year award that will be announced September 2, for the Clutch Player of the Year honour. Weber earned Defensive Player of the Year over fellow finalist Marcus Anderson of the Guelph Nighthawks. All CEBL awards are presented by Jostens, who is designing custom rings for all individual award winners plus the 2020 champion Edmonton Stingers.

The dynamic guard out of Virginian Commonwealth University averaged 12.4 points, 5.4 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 27.3 minutes in eight CEBL Summer Series games for Hamilton. He led the league in steals with a 2.50 per game average. His .481 field goal percentage was second best among Honey Badgers who attempted at least six shots per game.

During the Elam Ending of Hamilton’s quarterfinal playoff victory over Niagara, Weber contributed to eight of the team’s nine points, while recording two assists and sealing the 85-83 victory with a driving layup. He scored seven of Hamilton’s nine points during the Elam Ending of his team’s 102-96 victory over the Fraser Valley Bandits in a nationally-televised matchup on August 1. Weber scored the game winning field goal in the August 4 victory over Saskatchewan.

Hamilton finished third in the seven-team CEBL Summer Series with a 4-4 record, falling to Fraser Valley in the semifinals of the playoff portion of the competition, and owning the tie-breaker over Ottawa who also finished 4-4. Head Coach Ryan Schmidt has been announced as a finalist for the CEBL Coach of the Year award, which is expected to be announced next week.
