The Brampton Honey Badgers of the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) announced Tuesday that team president Michael Cvitkovic will be leaving his post February 22 after being named President and Chief Executive Officer of the Abilities Centre in Whitby, Ont. Cvitkovic has served as team president of the Honey Badgers since April 5, 2023, after serving in the same capacity with the CEBL’s Ottawa BlackJacks the three previous seasons. He began his CEBL career as a member of the Honey Badgers staff during the inaugural 2019 campaign.

“It is with a heavy heart and a great deal of gratitude to the Honey Badgers staff, the people of Brampton, and to my colleagues in the CEBL for five great years building this league and the franchises in Brampton and Ottawa,” Cvitkovic said. “The opportunity to play a lead role in helping create a barrier-free life for all Canadians, and to help bring solutions that make sport and recreation more accessible and inclusive for all, is unique and especially meaningful to me as it builds on my past career and enables me to contribute in new ways.”

During Cvitkovic’s time with the Honey Badgers, he made great strides in connecting the organization with the city of Brampton as a whole, including municipal government, community organizations, Brampton Minor Basketball Association, Brampton Board of Trade, and other groups. He brought alive a vision to unify the city and residents around Brampton’s only professional sports team, launching the “We Are Brampton” and “B-1st” campaigns.

During his five years in the CEBL, Cvitkovic also served as an advisor to Commissioner and Co-Founder Mike Morreale, delivering strategic and operational leadership after more than 20 years in professional sports and major events. He played a key role with CEBL broadcast properties, including national television partnerships with CBC and TSN.

Cvitkovic was named the first president in Ottawa BlackJacks history when they became the league’s seventh franchise in November 2019. In his time with Ottawa, the club collaborated with Ottawa Tourism to host a successful CEBL Championship Weekend in August 2022, which was won by the Honey Badgers during their final season in Hamilton before the club was forced to relocate to Brampton due to on-going problems with arena renovations issues in Hamilton.
