Honey Badgers Re-Sign Cassimy To Assistant Coach Post

Apr 06, 2021

The Hamilton Honey Badgers announced Tuesday that they have re-signed Sheldon Cassimy as an assistant coach for the 2021 season. Cassimy joined the Honey Badgers for the CEBL Summer Series in 2020, where he helped guide the team to a third place finish.

“Sheldon is an instrumental figure in the growth of basketball here in Canada and an integral part to what we are building in Hamilton”, said Honey Badgers Head Coach Ryan Schmidt. “The experience he brings combined with his ability to develop and make players better is unique and adds tremendous value to our staff. It’s an honour to have Sheldon part of our organization, and I’m looking forward to the impact he’ll continue to have with us.”

Cassimy attended Burnam University (formerly Canadian University College), where he played basketball and helped the team win four conference championships while attaining a B.A. SC. Health and Wellness degree. He began his coaching career with the University of Toronto as an assistant coach. He then spent time with the Brampton A’s of the NBLC, before returning to the OUA to help the Ryerson Rams win a provincial title under Interim Head Coach Patrick Tatham. While at Ryerson, Cassimy spent time developing current Honey Badgers players JV Mukama and Aaron Best

Cassimy continues to grow Canadian talent with his work for Canada Basketball. As the head skill development coach for the senior men, junior and cadet age groups, he facilitates workout sessions and guides support staff with points of emphasis for each player at the National Training Centre. Cassimy will be joining the McMaster University men’s basketball staff as the lead assistant for the 21-22 season.

Sheldon is Schmidt’s first staff announcement leading up to the Honey Badgers season beginning June 5. The Honey Badgers are coming off a 4-4 record and third place finish in the CEBL Summer Series, which marked the first professional sports in Canada to return to play after Covid-19 halted sports in March of 2020. More than 1.2 million viewers across Canada watched games live on CBC, and games were carried to more than 130 million viewers around the world.
