HONEY BADGERS SHINE OUT OF THE GATES IN THEIR INTERNATIONAL SEASONS

Kyle Warrener • Oct 23, 2023

As the calendar flips from October to November, many Honey Badgers are already in mid-season form with their respective clubs overseas. Between their club regular season campaigns, European championships, and other competition events, those who proudly wore the black and gold pinstripes in Brampton this summer have not missed a beat.

The dynamic Honey Badgers backcourt duo of Christian Vital and Koby McEwen quickly made some noise in Poland in just a handful of games, but not for the same team. Vital and Legia Warszawa have had a competitive start to their season, with two of the four early losses being by two points or less. To start the campaign, Vital averaged a team-best 15.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 3.0 assists in two games in the Basketball Champions League that was hosted in Antalya, Turkey. On the other side of the league, Koby McEwen is averaging 17.2 points, 3.2 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 1.4 steals through four games with Tauron GTK Gliwice. McEwen is joined by Terry Henderson Jr. and Kadre Gray, who were members of the CEBL Championship Finalists Calgary Surge and Ottawa BlackJacks respectively this summer. Vital and McEwen await their first head-to-head matchup in early December for the first of two meetings this season.

“Our organization has a great history of elevating players and coaches to the next level of their careers, and it is great to see the impact they have made opening their respective seasons,” said Honey Badgers president Michael Cvitkovic. “We eagerly await the tip-off of the 2024 season, and are hopeful that the experience our players will get with their clubs overseas will translate to more success here in Brampton.”

A late-season addition for the Honey Badgers, Shamiel Stevenson is off and running with KK Split in Croatia to begin the campaign. In four ABA League games, the six-foot-six guard has averaged 12.3 points and 3.3 rebounds in 24.8 minutes per game. Stevenson’s tenure in Brampton was highlighted by a 28-point performance at home against Scarborough, in a game that was broadcast live nationally on TSN as part of “Brampton Honey Badgers, We Are Brampton Day” in the city of Brampton. The Toronto native is in the midst of his third professional season, with previous stops in Serbia, Romania, and the CEBL.
