The Brampton Honey Badgers of the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) announced Wednesday that they have re-signed Kyle Johnson ahead of the 2023 season. Johnson played 13 games combined in the Honey Badgers pinstripes during the 2021 and 2022 seasons, averaging 6.1 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 13.4 minutes, shooting .576 from the field including .357 from three-point range. He is currently a member of the Newcastle Eagles of the British Basketball League, appearing in 21 games and averaging 15.3 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 2.1 assists to date.

The 34-year-old began his time in the CEBL with the Vancouver Bandits, formally known as the Fraser Valley Bandits, in the 2020 CEBL Summer Series before joining the Ottawa Blackjacks for the first four games of the 2021 season. He was released by Ottawa and signed by Hamilton on July 19, bringing a veteran presence to a young Honey Badgers roster. Now entering a fourth campaign in the CEBL, the Toronto native has appeared in 24 CEBL games averaging 5.3 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 1.1 assists.

Appearing in eight international competitions, Johnson, a dual citizen of Canada and Great Britain, has been a valued member of Great Britain’s Senior Men’s National Team helping to secure a berth at the 2012 Olympic Games and numerous European Championships. The 6-foot-5 guard has represented Great Britain in 38 international matches, most recently in the 2023 FIBA World Cup Qualifiers in February versus Belgium and Serbia.

A 12-year international basketball veteran, Johnson has played in 180 games overseas including stops in Greece, Italy, France, Iceland, and England.

Johnson graduated from Long Island University Brooklyn, spending the entirety of his four year collegiate career with the Sharks appearing in 124 games and hoisting a Northeast Conference Championship in his senior season.

Coming off a historic CEBL championship in 2022, the Brampton Honey Badgers open the 2023 campaign May 24 at TD Place Arena in Ottawa in what will tip off the league’s fifth season and be nationally televised on TSN. The Honey Badgers play their first game at the CAA Centre in Brampton two days later, May 26, against the Scarborough Shooting Stars. The CEBL announced the permanent relocation of the Hamilton Honey Badgers to Brampton on November 28, 2022.
